Learning support
Students at New Lambton South are supported by a strong Learning Support Team. Any student that requires additional support receives case management from our Learning Support Teachers and School Counsellor. All students needs are catered for through individualised learning plans or through adjustments made to the classroom program designed to meet their individual needs.
External providers such as speech therapist and occupational therapists are welcome in our school at the discretion of the principal and all parents who would like for an external provider to support their child must meet with the principal to discuss this.
Learning Assistance
The learning and Support Teachers (LASTs) work with students and class teachers to assess students’ learning and social skills and ensures programs are in place to improve. This can be an in-class individual or small group program or a withdrawal program. Many wonderful parents and community volunteers support students in their learning also.
At New Lambton South Public School we have 2 LASTs. Mrs Tweedale works on one day per week in this role and Mr Turnidge on 5 days per fortnight.
Parents should speak to their child’s teacher if they have any concerns about their child’s learning or behaviour. The class teacher or Assistant Principal in charge of the Stage will refer the child to the School Learning Support Team and through that body a referral to the school LAST is made. Often the LAST is invited to meetings with parents to plan for improvements in and additional support with learning.

Gifted students are those whose potential is distinctly above average in one or more of the following areas of ability at school – intellectual, creative, social, and physical.
Our gifted and talented program provides these students with learning opportunities on top of the normal curriculum.

Selective high schools
Selective high schools provide a challenging environment where high-achieving, academically gifted students can reach their potential. To apply for a selective high school you need to complete an application in Year 5 and students must sit the selective high school placement test in Year 6 to be considered for enrolment.
Some selective high schools accept students for entry into Years 8-12. Applications are available in June and must be made directly to your preferred school.
